Dr. Billie Walker Schmucker Scholarship

The Florida Nurses Foundation is proud to partner with the Sarasota County Nurse Practitioners (SCNP) to establish and host the Dr. Billie Walker Schmucker Scholarship Fund.
This endowment honors the remarkable legacy of a dedicated, long-time Florida Nurses Association (FNA) member and trailblazing Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN).
Purpose This scholarship memorializes and celebrates Dr. Billie Walker Schmucker's outstanding contributions as a Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner in Sarasota, Florida. It recognizes her lifelong commitment to advancing mental health care, mentoring emerging APRNs, fostering collaboration among providers, and advocating for legislative changes that strengthen the role of Nurse Practitioners.
The fund provides essential financial support for educational expenses to a deserving Nurse Practitioner student in the state of Florida.
Award Criteria Priority consideration will be given to applicants who:
- Are enrolled as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) student specializing in Mental Health/Psychiatric Nursing,
- Demonstrate a clear intention to establish their practice in Florida, and
- Are active members of a local Nurse Practitioner organization (such as SCNP).
If no applicant fully meets the above priorities, consideration will extend to:
- An APRN student in any specialty who resides in Sarasota or Manatee counties.
If still no qualifying candidate is identified, the award will go to:
- An APRN student in any field of study, residing in any county in Florida.
Scholarship Funding The scholarship is permanently endowed through an initial $10,000 contribution to the Florida Nurses Foundation in the name of Dr. Billie Walker Schmucker. This principal generates an annual award of $500 to one recipient each year, ensuring the scholarship remains ongoing and perpetual.
Additional contributions to the Dr. Billie Walker Schmucker Scholarship Fund will help grow the endowment, increase the award amount over time, and expand its impact on future generations of Nurse Practitioners.
